Akoya Pearl Quality

21st August - Submitted by Fine Jewelry

An Akoya pearl is considered as one of the most popular types of pearls of today which is basically grown and harvested through akoya oysters. Japan and China are so far the major and leading producers of Akoya pearls. Generally, an Akoya pearl is considered as the most lustrous of all pearls and this significantly elevates the quality of the pearl.

However, the pearl’s luster is only one of the five qualities that are being considered to determine the quality of the pearls. Aside from luster are the pearl’s surface, shape, color, and size.

The pearls’ color is vast which basically includes the colors blue, green, gold, white, cream, silver, black, champagne, and many more. Pearls usually have overtones that appear to be very evident from the pearl’s basic color. Akoya pearls are often white or cream in color accentuated with overtones like silver, cream, or rose. But then, the color of the pearl is one factor that determines the pearl that is appropriate for you.

The quality of pearl is also greatly influenced by its sheer size. This basically means that a larger sized pearl is valued of a much higher price. This is done by simply measuring the diameter of the pearl in terms of millimeters. But the Akoya pearls are relatively small in sizes as they are grown from the world’s smallest pearl-producing oyster. The general size of Akoya pearls fits within 6-8 millimeters and is somewhat smaller than freshwater, Tahitian, and South Sea pearls. But then, most of the pearls that are being marketed today fall in the range of Akoya pearls.

It is also through the smoothness of the pearl’s surface that its quality is clearly stated. A smooth surface is basically characterized by zero spots, no discolorations, and without bumps and spots. The main advantage of Akoya pearls is that they are most of the time shiny and reflective which in turn provides them with a high quality.

Freshwater pearls also vary in their shapes. In some cases, pearls have ringed shapes, significantly flattened into a disk-like button, tear-drop shapes, and those that are known as baroque pearls. Baroque pearls are those that happen to asymmetrical or abstract in shapes. But the most admired shape of them all is the perfect round which only comes in rare times and with a very high price. The Akoya pearl is that one kind of pearl that often come out an round or near-round shapes. These main characteristics of Akoya pearls help elevate their quality. These days, Akoya pearls are some of the considered favorites by pearl enthusiasts and the perfect elements in making jewelries.

  • “Oh my gosh! I just had my diamond re-set in his signature setting. It came out gorgeous! I have had two settings in the past from very reputable, well-known jewelers, and though it was technically correct, it didn’t do anything for showing off the beautiful diamond. I have already started to get comments from others and they think that it is a better, bigger stone than in the past; I explain that it’s the same one! This is the first time that this 1.5 K, “F” color, VVS2 stone has looked like it should, as it is a beautiful diamond, but never looked like it in the past, in spite of the re-settings and cleanings.” – Pam Lebon

If you’re in the process of considering Rochester Jewelry stores, make certain you take the time to visit West and Company, 1229 Bay Road, Webster. Just off Empire Boulevard near the Baytown Plaza, reach west and Company today at 800-580-6409. Don’t you deserve jewelry as unique as you are?

Letting Your Name Shine with Name Jewelry

21st August - Submitted by Fine Jewelry

You might have been one of the little tots on the playground back in the day, sporting the latest craze in sneakers. And around your wrist, you might have had a little glint whenever you moved your hand. Or maybe it was a flash of gold or silver around your neck that you liked to stop and fiddle with from time to time. When you were a child, receiving a little piece of jewelry with your name on it was precious. As a child, you are still discovering everything about your name. The meaning behind it, the spelling, and the subtle curves of the letters when you wrote it on paper were still fascinating. To see your name embossed in gold or rhinestones was nothing short of a miracle. It was a proud moment to be able to actually wear your name in shining letters. Necklaces and name rings alike, it was a youngsters dream come true.

And yet, some people lose that childlike wonder for his or her name as they grow older. After time and use, the name becomes less mysterious. It’s a travesty, because a name is the most precious possession a person has. The meaning and origin behind a name can hold such power over the person you become, it seems disastrous to lose sight of your name’s importance. Name jewelry may seem like it’s targeted towards a younger crowd. And yet, it can hold even more sentimental value for adults. After years of evolving with your name, maybe taking nicknames or learning a different way to write it, a name becomes the most inseparable part of you. A tasteful necklace or ring with your name engraved upon it can only add to your self-being and growth.

Not that such jewelry is rare in more adult settings. It is a marvelous idea to even add more meaning to an heirloom or ring, which you already hold dear, and have your name carved into it. Giving someone jewelry with your name on it is also a great gift idea. It can be overwhelming in a store when trying to find jewelry gifts. But giving someone jewelry with their name on it makes it a much more loving and personal gift.

So whether or not you were one of the kids sporting jewelry with your name on it as a kid, look to the present. There’s always time to find that newfound love for your name and celebrate it.

Tungsten Carbide Rings for Your Eternal Love

20th August - Submitted by Fine Jewelry

Tungsten Carbide Rings

Wouldn’t you like a wedding ring which keeps its lustrous look for a lifetime; a ring which is 4 times harder than titanium and will be just as beautiful on your fortieth, fiftieth or even sixtieth anniversary as it was on your wedding day? These rings exist; they’re tungsten carbide rings and these amazing rings keep their strength and their polish for decades. Tungsten carbide rings won’t scratch or dent like gold or tarnish easily like silver and they will keep their incredible looks for a lifetime.

So what exactly is tungsten carbide? Tungsten is an incredibly strong metal which is several times harder and more durable than silver, gold or even steel. Tungsten carbide rings are made by forging tungsten and carbon powder at 2,400 degrees (Fahrenheit) to produce a ring which is practically indestructible. After forging, the rings go through a diamond compound polishing process to provide them with a glossy polish which is for all intents and purposes permanent.

The toughness is definitely one of the main reasons that you would want a tungsten carbide ring for your wedding band. There is no other material known which can make rings that are as durable and resistant to damage as tungsten carbide rings. Tungsten itself is ten times harder than gold or silver, five times as hard as the steel that is used in most tools, and four times harder than titanium. You’ll find that you will never have to worry about denting the ring or of dropping it and giving it an ugly scratch or bend; in many places these rings have earned the title of the “Permanently Polished Rings.”

If you’re shopping for a wedding band, tungsten carbide rings are an option which you should certainly look into. Many couples think that tungsten carbide rings are a practicle and affordable choice, as well as an incredibly romantic material for their wedding bands. The invulnerability of a tungsten carbide ring is the perfect metaphor for a lasting, loving commitment, which can overcome the stresses and strains of life and come out with its shine intact.

All of these qualities make tungsten carbide rings a perfect choice for wedding bands, so it’s easy to find the perfect ring for that perfect person in your life.

Charm Bracelets with Your Childrens Names

Charm bracelets have been popular for centuries. What makes them unique is the engraving of your kids’ names. The most popular are made of silver or gold. Charms can be discs, squares, tags, and even framed photos of your baby. The Classic Vintage Bracelet is by far one of the best sellers. Created from mixed silver that has been oxidized to give the multiple woven strands of the chain an aged, antiqued appearance that will blacken with age, and a freshwater pearl accent, it has the classic pirate treasure look, perfect for Captain Jack Sparrow’s lady love. Each one is one-of-a-kind. The name of your child is hand etched on the top of the charm in the artisan’s elegant script and the birthdate is added to the back. ID Bracelets with Your Childrens Names

ID bracelets and cuffs come in gold, silver, and copper. Silver is the most popular metal that we have seen used for these parent insignia. Like medals of honor, they are worn with class and pride. We chose an original take on the classic ID cuff bracelet, the Sterling Silver Bangle Bracelet with Swan Clasp. Made with sterling silver, it is 100 percent hand made. The swan clasp makes it flow with the design of the bracelet. A sterling silver bead engraved with a leopard or dragon fly design increases the beauty of this simple yet elegant bracelet. Up to 50 characters is hand etched on to the band with your choice of font.

So where can you buy these types of bracelets? We looked at many online sites and we recommend Bracelets.com which has the largest collection of fine jewelry and bracelets that we found anywhere.

Choosing A Pair Of Diamond Earrings

19th August - Submitted by Fine Jewelry

If you are looking to purchase a new pair of earrings for your special someone, you are along the right track! Any woman with her ears pierced is going to love a new pair of earrings. While necklaces do not necessarily get worn every day, bracelets are only worn, for the most part, for special occasions, and rings can simply be forgotten about, most women wear earrings nearly every day. A new pair of nice, quality earrings is a perfect gift for any special occasion.

What Type Should You Buy?

There are thousands of different kinds of earrings out there. One of the most popular types of earrings is a set of diamond earrings. Diamond earrings are perfect because, let’s face it, almost every woman loves diamonds! A pair of diamond earrings is going to show your special someone that you really care about her. Even if you have already decided to purchase a pair of diamond earrings, however, you still might be at a loss as to what type of diamond earring to get her. There are so many different types out there, from diamond stud earrings to diamond drop earrings to diamond hoop earrings. Which ones should you purchase? The answer is actually simpler than you might think. What you need to do is look at the type of earrings that your special someone wears. If she wears a lot of stud earrings, a set of diamond stud earrings might be the best way to go. If she wears dangly drop earrings, you should look for a dangly dropped diamond earring set. Watching what she wears will give you a good indication of what type of earrings she prefers. However, you want to make sure that you are not simply duplicating what she already has. Make sure that the pair of diamond earrings you get her is unique and interesting and not simply another set that matches one she already owns.

Where To Purchase

Purchasing the diamond earrings is a big step. When you purchase something that costs a decent amount of money, you want to make sure that you are getting your money’s worth. Make sure that you get a certificate of authenticity for the diamond. In addition, it is probably best to go to a quality jeweler’s and not just a department store. Department stores are not known for their jewelry—they’re known for discounted prices and multiple items. Instead, take your business to someone who focuses on jewelry and really knows what they’re talking about. In the end, you will be glad that you did.

Purchasing Jewelry

19th August - Submitted by Fine Jewelry

If you are like most men, chances are at some point in your life you will find yourself purchasing jewelry for a woman. Most women love jewelry, and many men see it as the perfect gift for nearly any special occasion. Before the relationship is serious, the man can purchase small jewelry gifts to win the woman’s affection. After the relationship becomes serious, many men continue to purchase jewelry gifts to bring a smile to their special someone’s face or to celebrate a special occasion.

What Jewelry To Purchase

When purchasing jewelry for someone else, it is important to take into consideration a few things. First, what does your special someone already have in her jewelry box? If, for example, she has a set of diamond earrings that simply sit there and are never worn, chances are she does not want another pair that closely resembles those earrings. Instead, look at what she does wear. Does she wear drop earrings or post earrings? If she seems to prefer drop earrings, you could easily get her a set of diamond drop earrings that would be simply stunning. Or, if she prefers post earrings, there are countless different styles and colors for diamond post earrings.

Second, you must take into account the personality of your special someone. While nearly every woman would love to have more diamond jewelry, there are some women who do not like diamonds for various reasons. If your special someone does not like the way that diamonds are mined or how the people who mine them are treated, look for diamonds that are mined in a more humane manner. If she simply does not like diamonds at all, try another precious gem or stone. You could find almost any piece of jewelry with a sapphire or ruby instead of a diamond.

Where To Purchase Jewelry

While you may think that it does not matter where you purchase jewelry, it actually does matter. Though a diamond is a diamond, you are going to find much better quality diamonds at higher quality stores. There is a reason that the diamond necklace is priced lower at a department store than at a jewelry store. If you want a high quality piece of jewelry and are willing to pay a decent amount of money for it, look at jewelry stores, not department stores. Plus, when your special someone sees the box and where it is from, she will know that you really took time and consideration to purchase her a quality piece of jewelry.

Suggestions For Buying An Engagement Gift

19th August - Submitted by Fine Jewelry

If you are going to a friend’s engagement party, then of course you are going to want to bring an engagement gift to show the couple that you care and to show your appreciation for being invited to the party in the first place. There are a lot of different engagement party ideas that you could go with, gifts that are sure to please the couple, but there are a few ideas in particular for an engagement gift that you are really going to want to think about.

Engagement Gift Ideas

Before you come up with any engagement gift ideas, you have to remember that you are going to be buying them a wedding gift too, and really it should be the wedding gift that is more expensive, so wait for that occasion to go all out. You still want to get something nice, but just don’t worry about overdoing it.

The engagement gift should really just be something smaller to show the couple that you are thinking of them and that you are happy that they are on their way to get married.

One can gift a set of wine glasses to the couple. This is something that is not going to be too expensive for you to afford and yet something that is very nice and classy and which they are going to get use out of. Anything that is an item for the household that you know that couple would use is a great idea.

Gifts like small kitchen appliances or a set of monogrammed tea towels are appreciated by the couple. Cookbooks are an idea if you know that one or both of them like to cook, basically anything that you know they would like. Now if you have been invited to the party but you do not know the couple that well, you should talk to some friends and family first that know them better, so you can get a better insight into what they are all about.

Getting an engagement gift should not be a major deal but of course you do want them to be pleased. Also check if they have a registry because this way you could make sure that you were not getting them something that they had already received as a gift from someone else so this way you can see also what gift ideas the couple is interested in.

The History Of Engagement Rings

19th August - Submitted by Fine Jewelry

The history behind the very romantic tradition of men presenting the women they love with engagement rings is a bit less appealing than what happens now. In reality the earliest forms of engagement rings were more practical rather than romantic and were largely a sign that the woman was considered to be owned or part of the man’s property.

The Romans are the first group to use engagement rings, which were actually betrothal rings, as a way to signify a relationship. Again these were not the romantic engagements we know today; rather it was a way for the man to remind the woman that her heart belongs to him. It is interesting that the reason the third finger on the left has was selected is because ancient healers believed that the heart was connected with that particular finger by a vein.

The more modern style of decorative and detailed type of engagement rings started to surface in the Middle Ages. Precious stones such as rubies or sapphires were used in place of diamonds which were very rare. Only the wealthiest of royalty could afford to present these types of rings to their future spouses.

The first actual gift of an engagement ring with a diamond is attributed to Archduke Maximillian of Hamburg in 1477.  He presented his betrothal ring to Mary of Burgundy and is largely credited with starting the diamond engagement ring tends. Soon everyone that could afford diamonds was including them on the betrothal rings. Poorer, average people continued to give rings that featured symbols, which is were the tradition of the claddagh ring started.

Within the 18th and 19th centuries, diamond mines in Africa and South American started producing large quantities of diamonds that came in many shapes, colors and sizes. Adding diamonds to engagement rings for average income earners was now both possible and highly desirable.

Diamonds are some of the hardest gems, resistant to almost any type of damage. While the saying diamonds are forever was a marketing slogan, it is also one of the reasons they become so essential in engagement rings. Since there were many different qualities of diamonds on the market, the next step was to develop some type of grading for the stones.

With so many diamonds of different quality on the market a grading system was then developed. Certified diamonds, those that have be recorded, graded and evaluated are now available in any type of engagement rings or diamond jewelry items. The certified diamond is also described meaning that authenticity of the diamond is never in question.

While the history of engagement rings may be more practical than romantic, they are now a true and lasting symbol of love and commitment. Buying engagement rings with certified diamonds helps to protect your investment and help you determine the ring that is just right.
