Buying Charm Bracelets

24th May - Submitted by Fine Jewelry

Charms have been used for almost as long as man, and for a variety of reasons.  Early man used them to keep evil at bay and to protect. As time went on, they evolved into a sort of status symbol, clearly indicating which house or family a certain person belonged to.  For hundreds of years these were their primary use. Then, around the time of Queen Victoria, they became an item of fashion.   Since that time, charms have come and gone as far as being fashionable.

Today charms are very much a part of the fashion scene.  There are hundreds of different types of charm jewelry currently on the market. Some are very similar looking, others quite different.  You’ve all probably seen the classic charm bracelet, a gold or silver chain with small charms hanging down from it.  Some contemporary style charm bracelets such as Pandora charm bracelets, or Troll bead bracelets are built over time with many true to life charms.

With so many charm bracelets available these days, there seems to be something for everyone, no matter what age you are or how much you can afford to spend.  You can even buy replicas of the more expensive charms in some stores, for a much cheaper price.

Usually, the charms are made from gold, sterling silver, murano glass, enamel or a combination of one or two of these materials.  Silver charms are usually cheaper than other beads, though it depends on whether it has a precious stone or not.  Some charms also include a precious or semi-precious stone. One good example of this is the range of Pandora birthday charms. Each charm has a particular month’s birthstone on it.

Collectible jewelry, as Pandora and Troll beads are called, have some hanging charms but by far most of their charms more closely resemble beads that you’d chain onto a necklace. Pandora charms are actually screwed onto the bracelet, thus they are not always interchangeable with other bracelets.  The nice thing about these type of bracelets is that you can {simply modify} your bracelet by either rearranging the beads or by taking some off and adding others.

Charms are released at different intervals throughout the year, meaning that there’s always a new charm to buy and add to your bracelet. It’s a very smart retail move, as once you have started your charm bracelet it seems certain that you will continue adding to your collection as new beads are released.

First produced and released in Europe, both Troll beads and Pandora charms were eventually released to consumers in the United States, Australia and other parts of Europe, including the UK.  They were every bit as popular in these countries, and sales are increasing each year as more and more women are taking up the challenge of wearing personalized jewelry.
