Mechanical Watch Care and Maintenance

19th November - Submitted by Fine Jewelry

A mens designer watch is a big investment so once you have made your choice it is extremely important to care for your mechanical watch so that it is kept in good condition.Your mechanical watch is a highly intricate miniature that consists of hundreds of tiny moving parts. If it is cared for properly, your mechanical watch could become a real investment and heirloom so what steps can you take to keep it looking like new?

Make sure that your watch is given a full thorough service by a professional every 4-5 years.During this service the professional will take apart the watch movement before cleaning, regulating then re-assembling each piece.  If the watch is water resistant the seals will be replaced as the watch back has been removed.

Do take care when winding the watch. This should not be done whilst you are wearing the watch as this could damage some of the mechanisms.Wind your watch fully until you can feel resistance in the wind.

In order to reset the time on your wrist watch you should first remove the watch and then very gently pull out the crown before setting the hands to the correct time.If you need to adjust the date then pull the bezel out to the first notch only.Be careful because some watches will only wind to the date in one direction so if you go past you will have to scroll all the way through the rest first.Be sure that you never change the date between 10pm and 2am as this is when the date changing operations in the watch will operate.

Whilst it is not being worn you should store your watch in a dry environment that is away from direct heat or sources of dust.Never rest the watch on it’s crown or any of the push pieces as this will cause damage.
