Ways To Determine A True Diamond From A Fake

The surest method to determine  if a diamond is real or not is to go to a professional for an evaluation. That may appear atrocious, or you may have heard that there are habits that clever citizens with jewelers’ lopes can just take a glance and know which gravel are real and which are fake, but the truth is that it is attractive harder and harder to conclude a “real” diamond even for trained professionals, and it is perilously not easy for amateurs.

While that may be true, there are still things that have to be considered and followed. Always examine the stamp inside of the band which will tell you how many karats it is and this will increase your chances of making a legitimate deal.

If you have a powerful magnifying glass or a jeweler’s loupe, examine the girdle-band and edges of the cut stone. If the edges are soft and rolled, it is an indication of a fake one. You can also achieve this effect using a clear, smooth girdle at the junction of the facets around the heart of the stone.

A loupe can help you identify any imperfections in the stone. These were created naturally and are difficult to copy. Natural diamonds are worth the most when they are flawless and diamonds with minor flaws are not easily seen by most consumers.

A common indicator is weight. Simulated diamonds have a significantly different weight than an authentic diamond; cubic zirconium is much heavier. In order to compare diamonds, you require a precision scale and samples of real diamonds.

Keep glass away from your diamond to avoid scratching. Do not try acid tests that may be used on metals. Don’t give in to your curiosity and try to smash a diamond because it will crush because it is a crystalline material.    Just fog the stone. A pure diamond shifts the heat very fast to clear the stone before you can see it. It’s only a hint and even that is not fail proof. In terms of true worth, and proving comparatively valueless, composition stones that have the base of one material and a table of diamond, will “pass” the test.

A jeweler can tell you whether or not you got ripped off when you bought your “diamond”. That is why extra caution should be used when choosing a new jeweler, and each new gem or stone should have come with a certificate of authenticity. (stones are individual and documentation goes a long way in establishing its nature). A professional jeweler, working with trustworthy sources, would be dependable, helpful, and capable of ensuring you an absolute grade of appraisal.

Not making any negative generalizations, but be quite cautious when having a stone appraised at a chain jewelry store.  Businesses such as these demonstrate the pros and cons of ass produced distribution and manufacturing. Managers of these stores are often talented and honest men and women with honest supporting staff, but very few have the advanced training of managers and employees of higher grade jewelry stores or assessment businesses.

After you’ve found an appraisal service by searching online or in the yellow pages, make sure you thoroughly vet the assessor by looking at his or her experience, licensing and background. The best indicators of a skilled jeweler, is someone who is licensed, a journeyman from a traditional trade program, or someone who used to be a stone dealer.

Whenever you bring in a stone you are well within your rights to ask that it be tested under your supervision. This is to escape swapping from dishonest jewelers.. Turn around and walk right back out if you are refused. You can ask for complete documentation if you intend to buy a stone.. Regardless of your choice, you will need to understand that even the pros have difficulty in determining if a diamond is real or not, sometimes even looking at them two or three times.
